What is the best pressure cooker?
I have read a few reviews in order to buy a good pressure cooker. However, I am confused with all these models and brands that are available.
I am looking for a good quality, stainless steel, 8-10L, pressure cooker.
Could you please recommend any based on personal experience? I never had one so it’s diffucult to judge and make a decision. Many thanks

Can you can homemade lentil soup?
I have been reading mixed reviews on whether you can can soups…either by water bath or pressure cooker. Anyone know? And what is the shelf life either way? Thanks!

You sure can!
You’d need to use the pressure canning method, because the soup is low acid, but that’s no harder really than the water bath method.
The important thing to remember when canning peas, beans, or legumes of any type, lentils included, is that they HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY REHYDRATED FIRST! The best way to do this, according to every book I have read on home canning is:
For each cup of dried beans or peas, add 3 cups of water, boil 2 minutes, remove from heat, soak 1 hour, and heat to boil; drain.
One other note I have here says that lentils should only be used as an ingredient in broth based soups. I think by this, they mean “don’t use them in a creamy soup”, and “use them as one ingredient, along with many others, as you would any other vegetable”. I think there must be a texture problem with home-canned lentil soups. I have found that you can use French lentils for a much improved texture and flavor over the American types.
I also would not add any rice, barley, pasta(noodles), or flour to your home canned soup. The pressure bath creates quite a severe environment inside the jars, and you’ll end up with a gloppy, disgusting mess because these things will absorb liquid. Don’t add any milk or cream, either, for similar reasons. A home canner just doesn’t have all the fancy chemicals (like Campbell’s or Progresso) at her disposal.
Keep your soups simple, and can them correctly, and they should last about a year under normal conditions. I have also had wonderful success with cream soups and more complex soups and stews by getting one of those nice big FoodSaver bag sealer things and freezing them. It takes all of the air out of the bag, and the bag is so thick, the soups last for years.

A few questions on freezers?
I live in Australia
I’m a single person who is interested in purchasing a freezer because I like to batch cook with my 12 litre pressure cooker.
I think a chest freezer is better than upright due to great efficiency.
Please answer my questions if you can.
How much hassle/effort in defrosting chest freezer with easy drain system?
Your thoughts on Fisher & Paykel H160S? It seems to have favourable reviews and I think it might be right for me.
Is it true only Kelvinator have copper piping at back of their freezers and is that a reason for purchasing them over other brands (I heard this regarding their fridges a long time ago, with other brands using inferior aluminum I think)?
If freezer has say, 150 litres of effective capacity, how may litres of food placed in microwave freezer containers would actually fit in the freezer?
The freezer would sit next to the fridge. The fridge is against a wall and the freezer would be in a large pathway from the living room to the dining area but not be in the way. Is that appropriate for a chest freezer? Please tell me if an upright model would be more appropriate for this position.

I think a chest freezer is better than upright due to great efficiency. = correct and you can store way more per the cubic foot because the shelves are missing
defrosting chest freezer = modern freezers are frost free, no need, she only cleans hers once a year what little frost is there just wipes off
the middle questions are irrelevant just get the cheapest one – they all preform the same service – and they all lie about their energy ratings – so save some money
the dimensions of the freezer and the containers are needed to find the container amount and placement – wasted space on round corners is the issue – she uses square boxed shapes
you should NOT put two compressed appliances together (fridge and freezer have compressors to start them) for many reasons
first – they will set up a harmonic resonance that will filter through the electrical wiring and static up your computer and television, well that is if you live in an older home and doesn’t have isolated electrical circuits
second – the power draw when both the compressors start at the same time is usually too much for one circuit (outlet) to handle and in time causes fire
third – appropriate for whom , mom says if you want your freezer there then put it there – spread a table cloth over the top of it and play cards if you want – the only people who should care are the folks inside that house
fourth – most folks put the freezers in the garage, basement, or pantry to get them out of the way if you really want to know
fifth – you really don’t want the freezer in the kitchen cause it gets to hot in there, all your doin’ is makin’ it harder for the freezer to do its job
ours (two of them, one chest, one upright) are in the pantry with all the other types of long stored foods in jars, cans, boxes and bags

Go ahead and vent the standard hatred. I’ll wait.
Back? Okay. I was just reviewing Alex Rodriguez’ contract (for a different question), and the marketing incentive bonuses it pays him for hitting milestone home runs. He gets $6M for hitting #660, #714, #755, the record tying HR, and the record breaker.
Currently that’s 762 and 763.
Bonds has done his penance season, much like Sosa did. He can still hit. He’d be a better DH than anyone else the Yankees have. And his agent has said he’d play for the major league minimum. Plus, if anyone can thrive in the media pressure cooker that is New York City and shrug off distractions, it’s Bonds.
What if the Yankees sign him as their 2009 DH? That costs, what, $400k? They probably throw that away in unsold hot dogs.
Bonds hits, oh, 30 HR in the new Stadium, moving his record (yes, it IS his) up to 792. That makes it that much harder for Rodriguez to collect that last $12M bonus money. Now, he may break the larger record anyway, but he’ll have to work harder for it, and the 2009 Yankees get 30 HR (and probably a .450 OBP) from their DH slot.
Budgetarily sneaky.
I’d do it, but then I’m all about on-field performance.
Setting aside any Bonds loathing you may foster, what do you think?
I don’t have an opinion on whether Seligula imposed an unofficial and covert ban on Bonds. I wouldn’t put it past him, but there are valid reasons why he wasn’t signed for 2008. He does bring a LOT of baggage.
If there’s any team that would risk the kommissar’s wrath, it would be the Yankees, looking to get back into the playoffs.
Consider where Bonds stats, statistically:
1996 RBI — needs 4 for 2000
2935 hits — needs 65 for 3000
2227 runs — needs 69 to break Henderson’s record.
Those who think Bonds is all about Bonds must concede that, yes, he thinks about those numbers being within reach. (And, a stretch, 38 homers puts him at 800.)
I don’t think this will happen, but it’d be a hoot.
And the fans? They’d buy tickets even faster, for the chance to boo the man. Hatred is always a good short-term seller.
As for Bonds not having played — true, but that’s what spring training is for. Sign him to a minimum deal with make-good conditions, and if he really has lost it, cut him in March.
The upside is gigantic, the downside negligible. Signing Bonds (if his “play for the minimum” is sincere) takes more courage than money.

I think that it is not that much of a stretch to even suggest this. He is looking for one last run to prove his greatness, he can still swing a stick and a year off those bum knees may actually help his ability to play day in and day out. The risk as you said is not that big, the people who berate him for being a cheater will flock to Yankee games around the country to watch him one more time. It delays some big payouts to A-Rod which you know they would love to do and it gives the Yankees that maverick edge that the Steinbrenners always like to have, they do what no other franchise will do. It would be great to see.
