Review of WMF Perfect Plus 6-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker

WMF Pressure Cooker hoots to tell you to reduce pressure!

This pressure cooker has what they call an “audible” safety feature to tell you to turn the heat down, and reduce the pressure, it hoots! The 6 and a half quart size makes this a family sized pressure cooker, remember you have to leave a third of the cooker as space to allow the steam some room.

There is a definite revival of interest in pressure cookers, but these are not the cookers your mother used to use. There is no rattling and hissing as the steam escapes, no danger of the lid blowing off because the pressure has become too great to handle! The modern pressure cooker is very safety conscious, quiet and a sleek efficient piece of cookware.

There is also a move away from aluminum pressure cookers towards stainless steel; although many cookers have aluminum inner linings as it helps to spread the heat evenly. The WMF perfect Plus 6-1/2 quart pressure cooker is a modern design, with a nod towards yesteryear with its hooting alert!

Style File
WMF Perfect Plus 6-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker The WMF Perfect Plus 6-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker has a heavy-gauge Cromargan™ 18/10 stainless steel construction, Cromargan® is the registered trademark of WMF for 18/10 stainless steel. According to the manufacturer,
“ Cromargan® is an alloy of 18% chrome, 10% nickel and 72% steel. Chrome makes the material stainless; nickel makes it acid-resistant and adds gloss.”
This is what gives the cooker a glossy shine.

It also has black ergonomic handles that are heat resistant and detachable for washing. The WMF range is made in Germany and their tests show that, on average cooking time is reduced by 70% and the energy consumption by 50%. Pressure cooking is therefore, economic and healthy.

The WMF Pressure Cooker Perfect plus 6 ½ quart is part of a range that includes; Perfect, Perfect plus and Perfect Ultra pressure cookers, in sizes from 2.5 litres to 8.5 litres.

WMF have won a number of design awards and their innovative technology is focused on making their products more usable for their customers. An example of this is the development of their TransTherm technology for the base of their cookers range. Aluminum is a good heat conductor, but there have been concerns about aluminium traces in food when used as a cooking material for pots and pans.

It is also not a good material when scrubbed with abrasive cleaners as the aluminium, again is released and it scratches too reducing the shine and looks of the products.WMF have enclosed an aluminium core in a chrome steel capsule, you get the heat properties but no transference of aluminium metal, or scratching of the cooker. This makes the cooker easier to clean and with the slightly cambered base it means these pressure cookers work well on all types of stove top. The camber base expands when heated and lies flush to the stove top, ensuring stability and the best heat transmission across the base, of great importance with electric and induction cookers.

Usability
The manual and instructions that come with the WMF Perfect Plus 6-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker are very clear to read and well illustrated with helpful diagrams. It is also very clear on what NOT to do with a pressure cooker. In addition the instruction leaflet covers a series of potential problems and their solutions, commonly asked questions and guidance as to what to do. For an instruction manual it is surprisingly well written in ordinary English!

The WMF Perfect Plus is a straightforward pressure cooker, with adequate capacity for a family to use and easy functionality for a beginner. It is easy to clean, and the detachable handle means that you can ensure all the fiddly hard to get at bits are cleaned.

When in use it is quiet, unless it gets too hot then it will “hoot” at you to turn the heat down. It has an easy to read pressure gauge indicating medium to high pressure which is very clear and unambiguous. The handle is easy to detach and locks on with an audible click so you know that it is secure.

What customers say
Users like the fact that this is clearly a heavy duty well made cooker, it is heavy, but that is reassuring as some have found other pressure cookers to be flimsy. Customers like the look of it, they describe the stainless steel body as having a mirror finish which is easy enough to maintain with a bit of polishing using a soft cloth.

The “helper handle” on the opposite side to the main handle is a practical and much appreciated feature, pressure cookers get heavy when full and not everyone is strong enough to lift them with one hand. A couple of customers have had parts break and need replacing and were less than impressed by the customer service that they received, despite the availability of parts on the website it is not clear how to order them, and there was a dispute over what the warranty actually covers.

However, overall, customers on Amazon rate the WMF Pressure Cooker at 4.5 out of 5. Certainly WMF take their product development very seriously and have some excellent design features in these cookers, all customers agree that the cooking results are great.

The WMF Pressure Cooker retails at $255 but you can get it for around the $199 price bracket, and Amazon are selling it for $199.89 including free super saver delivery.
